Steps to Prepare for a New Semester

I wrapped up my first semester of university in December and have been enjoying my time off creating more content. But before I know it, my break will be up and I will go back to university and start my second semester. I have definitely learned a few things from the first semester. I thought I would share them with you. Also I recommend reflecting on your semester as well but I listed the prompts for that on my previous post which can be found here.

Step 1: Figure out your schedule

If you already picked all your courses, or have a list of courses you need to take, this is a step you can skip. For everyone else, though, taking just a bit of time to figure out how you want your next semester to look like, it is important to take some time to figure this out. Once that’s all accomplished, figure out when you’ll do your extracurriculars, or sign up for your shifts at work. This way you know when you are available and when you aren’t which can make adding fun things to your schedule easier.

Step 2: Get your Textbooks ahead of time

Don’t wait until you obtain your first assignment to get your books. If you don’t know what textbooks are required, reach out to your professors a few weeks before school and request a list of needed reading materials. This small step indicates that you’re willing to take initiative, and also supplies you more time to purchase or rent your textbooks, or request a copy from the library. If you’re feeling motivated, read through the first chapter to familiarize yourself with the course material before your first class.

Step 3: Clean everything

Clean your computer desktop and downloads folder, delete all those temporary PDF’s, categorize everything in folders, and be ready for the new semester with everything in place. Think about changing your screen image, with something peaceful, possibly related to the season … nature is always a good idea! Or even an inspiring quote!

Step 4: Read the Syllabi

The syllabus is very important when starting new classes. The syllabus is usually available before anything else about the class. It will give you details on what is required for the class including a precise summary of what is expected and what the schedule will be like. Sometimes it even gives you assignments/project due dates. Reading this before the semester begins will help you when you already know what to expect.

The second semester is just around the corner! So why not make the best of it by preparing right off the bat? Good luck! I hope this helps you achieve and finish out the semester and the rest of the year strong.
